It’s Cool at the Players Theatre

Thame Players have just installed a new air conditioning system at the Players Theatre. This has replaced an outdated and inefficient air conditioning unit with a much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly system, consisting of three new units and a compressor. Not only is the Players Theatre now a cooler place to be when the temperature rises in summertime, it is also more comfortable year-round, because the air conditioning distributes the air so that heat generated by the theatre lighting is dissipated.

Other benefits include a calmer atmosphere and more space in the dressing room because the previous bulky unit has been replaced with an external compressor and the new unit is far less noisy.  So actors and visiting performers will have more of a smile on their faces and perform even better than before!

The work involved cutting holes in the ceilings of the control room and streaming room and fitting a new unit in each; erecting a scaffold tower in the auditorium to remove the old unit and replacing this with a new one; removing the old unit from the dressing room; fitting a new compressor on the theatre roof over the stage door entrance; wiring to the new units; testing and certification of all new units.  A small team of Thame Players volunteers carried out all this hard work and congratulations are due to Steve Lambell, Phil Holland, Mike Chester and Kevin Brooker on their achievement! This project was enabled by a grant through the Theatres Trust, the national advisory public body for theatres.

Thame Players are committed to becoming greener in line with Thame’s Green Living Plan, a ten-year plan that will enable Thame to progress towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future. The environmentally friendly air conditioning units form part of their mission to ensure the theatre is sustainable for future generations.
