Wheelchair Rugby Comes to Thame
On Saturday (27 July), Chinnor RFC held its second “taster session” for disabled juniors aged 12-17 years. The event was staged in collaboration with Stoke Mandeville Maulers wheelchair rugby team and the GB Junior wheelchair rugby programme development officer, Jamie Higgins.
The initiative, spearheaded by Chinnor RFC Wheelchair Rugby Lead, Paul Corris, aims to develop a junior wheelchair rugby team at the club that will play competitive matches and act as a feeder club for the adult Stoke Mandeville Team.
The sessions were hosted by Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) qualified coaches and ex-paralympic athletes and all equipment was provided.
There were smiles all round Lord Williams’s School gymnasium during the highly competitive match. The sessions provided the teens with a great opportunity to try wheelchair rugby and learn the basics of the sport in a fun and controlled atmosphere.
