New year message from the Mayor, Cllr Ann Midwinter on behalf of all Thame town councillors and staff:
‘With the England lockdown rules in place, I would like to assure you that Thame Town Council are supporting the Thame Good Neighbour Scheme and Love Thame Blue Hearts who are able to assist if you require help during this new phase of lock down. I am sure as a community Thame will pull together as we did last time and I would also like to thank all our local frontline NHS staff and keyworkers who are doing such a wonderful job in these unprecedented times. We now have two vaccines; a light at the end of the tunnel for us to go forward with confidence and hope for a return to normality as soon as possible. In the meantime we all need to abide by the rules – Stay Home>Protect the NHS>Save Lives.’
Christmas tree and garden waste recycling update
Due to staff shortages at SODC, all garden waste collections are cancelled until further notice so that the crews can concentrate on collecting household rubbish. If you have a real Christmas tree for recycling please take it to the designated area in the Cattle Market car park by 9 January 2021. Any trees left after this date will not be collected.
Nutcracker damage
Unfortunately as many of you will be aware, the Nutcracker which had stood tall and proud outside the Town Hall to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to all in these difficult times, was damaged beyond repair on New Year’s Eve. Please be assured that the police are dealing with the matter.
Community Christmas in a Box
The week beginning 14 December was a festive foodie week at the Red Kite Family Centre. Over £2000.00 was given through the virtual online shop which was amazing. Donations from Waitrose Community Fund and Thame Welfare Trust brought the total raised to £3400.00! Although there couldn’t be a live collection at Waitrose this year, many people still donated items for the Christmas boxes. This enabled 186 boxes of Christmas goodies to be packed up which was about 80 more than last year. They have now all been delivered to the nominated families and individuals in our community. A huge thank you to the Red Kite team, Phoenix Community Club, Sharing Life Trust and Rotary without whose help it wouldn’t have been possible. A big thank you to Christchurch for the loan of your hall.
Afternoon tea delivery success
After the ‘annus horribilis’ that was 2020, Inner Wheel and Rotary Club of Thame brought some Christmas cheer to 80 local residents. As the annual senior citizens’ Christmas tea party could not go ahead as planned, the organising committee of Inner Wheel, Rotary Club of Thame and Thame Town Council, with a grant from South Oxfordshire District Council and Sharing Life Trust, donations from Hampden Masonic Lodge and Waitrose arranged a doorstep delivery of afternoon tea and a floral gift which were delivered on 18 December. The recipients also had the chance to win a Waitrose goods worth £50 by successfully completing the Christmas quiz that was enclosed. The joint winners who each received a hamper were Praiwion Gordon and Owen Davies. We would like to thank all our local volunteer driversand Thame Rotary Club who worked together to deliver the afternoon tea boxes to our local elderly residents and to all the sponsors for all their generous donations. Ann Midwinter, Mayor of Thame said ‘helping with the distribution of the tea boxes was one of the highlights of my year and after the year everyone has just had, hopefully it bought some much-needed Christmas cheer.’
Christmas Hampers
50 Christmas hampers were delivered to members of the Thame Senior Friendship Centre Club. Thanks are given to TSFC Manager Kate and volunteers for delivering the hampers, and Hiren and Vanessa at Tesco Broadfields Aylesbury who went above and beyond expectations when helping with the stock for the hampers.
