Solar energy and buildings

The Government is looking to boost the uptake of solar panels and equipment to help the Country become more self-sufficient for energy. Among other matters, they are looking at relaxing rules on where solar energy equipment is allowed to be fitted to houses and businesses.

For houses and flats, it is proposed to allow solar equipment, including panels, to be fitted to flat roofs and on walls fronting roads in conservation areas for the first time and for greater flexibility to be given around ground-level installations in gardens. For businesses and organisations, the Government is looking at similarly relaxing restrictions in conservation areas and removing the current 1 megawatt electricity generation limit. Separately, non-domestic car parks would have the right to have solar canopies installed over them, subject to certain restrictions.
