  • SODC Grant Approved for Thame Town Cricket Club

    Thame Town Cricket Club receive £250,000 towards new clubhouse development. Thame Town CC moved one step closer to realising their dream of a new clubhouse this week when South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) approved a grant application towards the project for £250,000. The application was scored highly for ‘Providing new facilities and activities’ and ‘Community benefit.’ The clubhouse will be suitable for multiple sports and community use for a range of activities and uses.     Photo credit: Barry Blight On Sunday 13 November, Thame held its Service of Remembrance to remember those who had lost their lives serving our country. There was a fantastic turnout and the weather stayed dry too. Large crowds gathered to process from the Town Hall to the Memorial Gardens, where the Act of Remembrance took place. This year, Thame’s Service was selected to be joined by two of Thames Valley Police’s mounted section escorts – Odin and Pagan.     Plans are well advanced for the best Small Business Saturday yet in Thame on Saturday 3rd December. Thame’s High Street retailers are being invited to enter a Christmas window display competition, with a first prize of a case of prosecco, a consultation with a retail marketing expert and a trophy, as well as runner-up prizes.     With Thame’s Christmas Lights Switch-On just round the corner, some more details about the event have been revealed.   On Friday 2 December, from 3pm, come and watch some fabulous stilt-walking and balloon-making from local entertainer Colonel Custard.     Small businesses, young entrepreneurs and retailers alike were big winners on Small Business Saturday, held in Thame on Saturday 3rd December. Samantha Bond, the Downton Abbey actress, came to Thame to judge and present the prizes for the best window displays in the Small Business Saturday Christmas window display competition. From 18 entries submitted, Samantha and Keith Slater, a retail expert, chose three winners.     It has been almost four years since the Thame Neighbourhood Plan was adopted and in that time our community has experienced many changes and developments. The Council’s Neighbourhood Plan Continuity Committee continue to monitor the delivery of the Plan.     In preparing its budget for 2017-18, Thame Town Council has again looked hard at where it can make savings (both in terms of cuts and further efficiencies), while at the same time providing the projects, functions and services that the community of Thame expect to be delivered.   The Budget Working Group set a target of a maximum increase in precept (i.e. the proportion of overall Council Tax that is paid by Thame residents specifically for the projects, functions and services to be normally delivered by Thame Town Council) of 1.99%.     Oxfordshire County Council wants to know what you think about its draft proposal to abolish all six councils in Oxfordshire and replace them with a one new council for the whole county, called a ‘unitary’ council.   Why change? Central government is changing the way councils are funded, and councils will soon have to pay for services mainly from council tax and business rates.
